John writes so that his readers will have a profound confidence in the gospel. Our eternal life is secured by the great assurance that the resurrected Jesus stands as our advocate at the Father�s side. He secures our relationship with God�even when we sin�now, and forever.

How does the Christian know that the message they have believed is true? They have the historical eye-witness testimony of the Apostles, authorised and commissioned by Jesus himself, immediately recognised by the Christian community�and now recorded and preserved for us in the Bible.

We live among many who are �Anti-Christ�. While their opposition takes many forms, we are to focus on faithfully trusting the gospel we know so well. We remember that it is this gospel which saves us and not the court of public opinion. Our role is to live congruently with the gospel and reject hypocrisy.

John calls his readers to �walk� in the light�the light of fellowship with God. They are to live their lives, trusting in the promises of God, and especially his promise of the forgiveness of sins.
